How I Discovered Chalk Art

I always love it when people ask me how I got into chalk art because it’s never a full sentence.

“How did you…err….what made you start….or, like, where did you learn…..??”

I’m pretty sure they’re all eluding to the same thing. That thing being, “this is kind of a random weird skill and why in god’s name would you choose to do something so arbitrary and spend that much time working on something that can be easily ruined?”

I always want to respond by telling them “I’d like to think that chalk art found me” but then I’d be one of those people who says nonsensical things in a manner that makes people think they’re supposed to understand what you’re saying , even though you’ve said nothing. I hate those people so I don’t say that. Instead, I just shrug and make a stupid face that says “I dunno”. Sadly, that’s sort of the true story.

I don’t really know why I got into chalk art. I stumbled across it when a friend gave us a chalkboard. I thought it was kind of fun to write on but I wasn’t particularly skilled with it. I came across a few incredible artists on Instagram and I was like “Wait, wait, wait…how are they doing that?” Then I’d try it and practice it and suddenly it made sense. Rinse and repeat about 8,000 times and you’ve got yourself a bonafide chalk artist!

Once I started realizing what was possible with chalk, I started getting really excited to try more and more things. The more I tried, the better I got and the better I got, the more fun I had…so I just kept doing it and now I use it as therapy instead of watching all 6 seasons of The Sopranos for the 9 millionth time.

…and that’s the uninspiring true story of how I got into chalk art.
